USEFUL INFORMATION FOR A SUCCESSFUL STAY
Locks
The front door is on a code. You received the code before arriving, and that code will remain the same throughout your stay. The code changes with each guest. If you keep the inside lock turned horizontal, the door will always lock behind you when you leave. If you turn the knob on the inside vertical, the door will remain unlocked. Please lock and secure the doors whenever the cabin is left unattended. Please do not use the second story outside door in winter as it is difficult to open and shut properly in cold weather. There are a total of four outside doors. Please make sure they are all shut and locked before leaving the cabin.
Heat
There are two sources of heat. The primary is the gas stove and the temperature is automatically set before you arrive. If you need it a little warmer or cooler during your stay, feel free to move the thermostat on the wall up or down based on your desires. Just be sure to set the temperature back at 70 degrees when you leave. The cadet heaters located in two of the bedrooms and bathrooms can be used as secondary heat sources. Please turn them down to 50 degrees upon leaving. There are additional space heaters throughout the cabin to take the chill off a particular room. You are welcomed to use them, but please make sure they are unplugged before leaving to avoid a fire.
Cooling
There is no central AC at the cabin as the trees and elevation typically provide enough cooling alone. You are welcome to open the windows to cool things down. Just be sure the screens are secure so no bugs get in and that all windows are closed upon leaving. There are also a few fans scattered throughout the cabin for those rare days that it does get warmer than is comfortable.
Towels
White towels are for bathing and showering. The beige or grey towels are for hot tub use. Please reuse towels to conserve energy. Please do not use the white or beige bath or hand towels for makeup removal. Please start a load of white or beige towels (whichever is larger) washing upon checkout. Do not put black towels in the wash and do not mix towel colors please.
Bedding
Each bed has a mattress cover, sheets, and a bedspread. Additional blankets are provided for your convenience. Should you need extras during your stay, they can be found in the drawers and cupboards as labeled. If you end up using a bed and/or bedding, please leave the bedding unmade so we know which linens to wash for the next guest.
Cooking
Full kitchen facilities and needed utensils, tools, pots/pans, bowls, etc. are provided for your use. Feel free to use anything you need to cook. Please clean up after yourself.
Grill
The grill is located on the deck. Please do not move it from its place. Turn on the propane at the bottle. The igniter does not always work, so feel free to use a long-stemmed lighter (in Misc drawer) to light the grill. Clean the cooking surface, and be sure to leave it as you found it (including turning off the propane at the bottle).
Laundry
A stackable washer and dryer are provided in the main floor bathroom. You are welcome to use it for your personal items as well as used cabin towels/linens. Washing pods are provided on top of the appliances (use one pod per load) as well as dryer sheets. Please clean the lint trap before each use. Turn to the desired setting and hit the start button to begin a load.
Fire Table
The fire table is for your use, but unfortunately cannot be out during winter due to snow removal. It will be brought out in the spring and put away in the fall. Please read the instructions and safety precautions located in the cabinet before use. No not leave flame unattended. Enjoy!
Bears and Wildlife
This is Island Park (a suburb of Yellowstone National Park). Yes, we get wildlife (even at the cabin), and yes, there are bears in the area. The likelihood of you seeing a bear at the cabin is small, but please be “Bear Aware” by not leaving food items out (including in coolers or grill). Moose and other wildlife are not to be underestimated. They are wild, dangerous animals and should be respected. Enjoy your time in nature, but be safe please!
SAUNA INFORMATION
To begin use, please enter the sauna and turn the temperature dial all the way up. Then turn the other dial to 1 (do not turn past the first “clunk” or it will not work properly). Take the water bucket out with you and fill it up. Wait about 30 mins and enter the sauna again (please no shoes, food, or drink other than water) with the water bucket. The sauna is a steam sauna. It is a wet heat and will not feel hot untill you use the water to create steam. As needed, ladle water on the rocks to create the steam. Do not use sauna if you are pregnant or been drinking, and do not stay in more than 15 mins at a time.
HOT TUB INFORMATION
Whether it is after an eventful day visiting our Nation’s First National Park, or after a long ride on your sled, coming back to a soak in the hot tub can be just what the doctor ordered. However, there are a few things to know about the hot tub to keep it perfect for your use and the use of those to follow.
- Please help maintain the cleanliness of the tub by quickly showering before you enter
- Only use the colored towels for the hot tub (white towels are for bathing and showering)
- The hot tub should already be hot, clean, and found with the lid on
- Please carefully remove the lid using the lift assist system (it takes two people to do this safely)
- Though the tub is already warm, it can get as high as 104 degrees. When it is cold outside, the temperature can drop quickly with the lid off. Help reduce cooling, by starting with it hot, only take off the lid halfway if 2-3 persons are using it, do not get in and out of the tub frequently, and do not introduce snow/ice to the water
- To increase or decrease the temperature, use the up and down arrows
- The jets, led lights, and heater can all be run at the same time, but not for long periods of time
- The deck and steps can be very slippery when wet, so please be careful
- Please do not leave children unattended in the tub area and if you are elderly or pregnant, please
- consult a doctor
- The security cameras are pointed at the entry and exit doors only and do not include the hot tub area in the frame. Trust us, we do not want to see you anymore than you want to be seen 😉
- Please do not sit/stand or put heavy objects on the hot tub cover as it will break
IN AN EMERGENCY OR IN CASE OF FIRE: The shut off for the hot tub is mounted on the logs near the tub. The breaker for the tub electricity is in the main floor, right bedroom behind the door and the breaker is the lowest right and is labeled. Fire extinguisher is mounted near the kitchen.
PARKING, ATVS, SNOWMOBILES, AND TRAILERS
Island Park is a mecca for snowmobiles and ATVs. People come from all over the world to ride the over 950 miles of groomed trails. Chances are, if you are here, you are ready to ride. There are a few things you need to know about our cabin.
Please drive slowly and quietly on residential streets. Dirtbikes, ATVs, side-by-sides, and fourwheelers are not allowed at the cabin. These summer toys need to remain on your trailer parked near the main road (see map in this book). Snowmobiles can be parked in the designated parking spots at the cabin, but must be pulled entirely off the road.
All trailers (no RVs) must be parked in designated area and must be arranged in advance with the caretaker.
All public roads within the cabin’s vicinity are dual-use (cars and toys share the same roadway), so please be careful, follow traffic rules, and yield to larger vehicles. You can access national forest North on Phillips Road and the first trail to the left or the famous 001 Yellowstone Trail by going about 1 mile west on Rainbow Road. Please be respectful of others, wear a helmet, and have fun!
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
This is why you came, right? Yellowstone National Park is the caregivers’ happy place. It is a magical land with hot geysers, wildlife, and natural beauty. We truly hope you enjoy your time in the Park!
Yellowstone is 29 miles (about 30 minutes) from the cabin. Just head North on Highway 20 to West Yellowstone – you can’t miss it. There is an entrance fee associated with the Park, so be sure to check the latest rates. In the winter, you must have a guide to access the Park. There are two, intersecting loops (think of it as a figure 8). The upper loop is less popular (thus, less crowded) and includes sites such as Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Falls, and the Lamar Valley. The lower loop has Fishing Bridge, Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb and – of course – Old Faithful. The middle is home to Norris Hot Springs and Canyon Village. Yes, you can do both loops in one day, but start early and do not spend too much time at each site. We highly recommend you split Yellowstone into two (or even three) days. You are staying here, and here is only 30 minutes away, so why not!?!
By the way, many food options close early in Island Park, so you may want to think ahead and get food in West Yellowstone after a long day in Yellowstone rather than hope something is open closer to home.
YEAR ROUND ACTIVITIES:
Spring is a time of change and renewal in Island Park bringing wildlife newborns, bear sightings, and beautiful scenery to photograph. Summer days provide visitors unlimited access to explore and play in the splendor of the high country. You can fish blue-ribbon trout streams, hike in pristine wilderness, experience real western horseback riding, go whitewater rafting, or mountain bike on hundreds of miles of singletrack and forest service roads. Fall brings spectacular scenery and the annual elk mating season where huge bull elk battle for their harems with eerie, echoing bugles. Winter brings an average annual snowfall of 143 inches, which means endless adventures in cross-country skiing, ice fishing, sled dog tours, and much more. Enjoy snow coach or snowmobile tours into Yellowstone National Park from West Yellowstone—the only daily winter entrance into the park. West Yellowstone, your outdoor playground with for every season.
